Letizia Battaglia

The truth in balck-and-white

Letizia Battaglia is recounting the changing face of Italy with a collection of fifty photographs full of history. 83 years old, known for her estetic rigoure of black and in line with her dislike for colour:“even today, the mere thought of the colour of blood makes me feel ill”. She considers that black and white is more silent, solemn and respectful. A leading role also when she observes the work of other authors. A question of artistic taste, weel-defined in her aesthetic values and very much connected to her own perseption. Battaglia’s photography springs from an ethical need and is closely associated with life. Her photography enables her to reach out to others and recount their suffering. An arist twho through the camera, crystallises moments of absolute truth.
