Natalia Goncharova at Palazzo Strozzi

A Woman of the Avant-garde
with Gauguin, Matisse and Picasso

Palazzo Strozzi is dedicating to Natalia Goncharova (1881-1962) a major retrospective. The first female artist of Russia’s avant-garde scene in the first half of the 20th century, a non-conformist and a rebel who was successfully able to earn a living with her art. The exhibition vaunts 130 artworks that are difficult to tie to a single style. Though we can certainly find Rayonism, the style she created together with Michael Larionov, her lifelong partner who she met at school and stayed with until her death. She was also the first woman to demonstrate how artists can blend tradition and innovation, East and West, Russian icons with Fauvism and Futurists. Hers was a one-of-a-kind versatility that allowed her to create both theatre costumes and haute couture clothing. A friend of Diaghilev and Coco Chanel, she was the first to paint female nudes so risky that she was subjected to several trials and was even recently censured by Instagram.
