Paris in the Belle Époque
Toulouse-Lautrec's work is on display at the Museo degli Innocenti offering a journey into the Paris of the Belle Époque. The exhibition offers an immersive experience of late 19th-century through more than 170 works, accompanied by period furnishings, objects and photographs that evoke the vibrant and decadent spirit of an era that reshaped taste and modernity. Recognised as one of the leading figures of Post-Impressionism, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864–1901) portrayed the cabarets, music halls, cafés and brothels of bohemian Paris with empathy and wit. His works offer a fascinating, almost journalistic view of the pre-World War I era.
An exhibition that highlights his extraordinary achievements in graphic art, where modern life intertwines with the fluid lines of Art Nouveau. Few artists of his time so seamlessly merged art and life: he created theatre posters, book covers, invitations, café menus and lithographs, blurring the boundaries between fine and applied art. His famous posters, which animated the kiosks of Paris, are famous throughout the world.
