Salvatore Ferragamo Museum - The best of 1920s creativity

Born in Bonito, south of Naples, the eleventh son of fourteen children, Salvatore Ferragamo started working when he still a boy at the shoemakers downstairs. At age 13 he has already working for himself. In 1915, just 16 he left home on the Stampalia with a third-class passage, wishing to join his siblings who had emigrated to California. In only a decade, he became the most sought-after shoemaker in Hollywood. He didn’t stop there. He wanted to work with true artisans. Wealthy American families had heard about Florentine craftsmanship – and Salvatore too. It was said that the most beautiful lingerie, silverware, leather and straw hats in the world were made in Florence. So, in 1927, Ferragamo came back to Italy, to Florence, this time in first class. Now, the Salvatore Ferragamo Museum is focusing on these years through the futuristic works of Depero, Balla, Maccari, Martini, Rosai, Thayaht and Gio Ponti, interwoven with the famous shoes made by Ferragamo, fabrics and items of genuine craftsmanship.
