Trattoria alla Vecchia Bettola

We all know that Florence’s beauty will leave you speechless, but after having seen its splendour in all shapes and sizes, dedicate some of your time to visiting San Frediano. This area of the city holds the magical atmosphere of a long-lost time – maybe that’s why Lonely Planet declared it as the “coolest” place on earth. There is an infinite variety of restaurants in the area, but there is one local eatery we’d like to recommend: Alla Vecchia Bettola! Loriano and Carla – childhood sweethearts – and their children have divided up their tasks in the restaurant. One of them is in charge of the shopping, one cooks, one is serving and one tidies up. They’ve been there for three generations, serving people who come and go. Everyone sits on wooden benches and shares a table, eating whatever is in season – just like at home. The menu offers many different choices, but if you ever happen to go there do not miss out on the starters, the Penne alla Vecchia Bettola, the Polpette di pelliccia – and most of all the Bistecca alla Fiorentina.
