It was in 1872 that increasing light pollution drove Florence’s astronomers to abandon La Specola Observatory and move to Arcetri, inaugurating the largest refractor telescope in Italy. It’s still in use today and is called the Amici telescope. But the hills of Arcetri have always been a chosen spot for astronomy enthusiasts.
