Nari Ward is a Jamaican artist and one of the most critically-acclaimed on the international stage. His works are made with “narrative” materials that speak of the social, economic and ritual life of entire communities. Shoelaces, strollers, shopping carts, televisions, all kinds of found objects: these are all elements for constructing contemporary metaphors. His pieces are structured as bases, from which reflections and thoughts of profound social and cultural depth can take flight. Every narration is different because the approach is unique: at times fascinated by materials, at times by the possibility to retrace common or individual histories. But no matter the inspiration, every work aims to encourage understanding and a return to conceptual, scientific, subjective and autobiographical facts. For the occasion, Nari Ward was invited to speak with UNIC – Conceria italiane e Lineapelle to examine the characteristics and dynamics of the entire territory.
The exhibition showcases never-before-seen artworks made specifically for the project. They represent transmigration within the territory of Santa Croce sull’Arno and many different aspects of its productivity and social complexity. This unique collection contrasts with virtuosity themes important to the artist, including transparency and opacity, playfulness and seriousness, eternity and transience, movement and permanence.
