La Specola is Europe’s oldest natural history museum and it contains the world’s largest collection of anatomical wax models. A fascinating insight into human anatomy, through wax sculptures made by master artisans. The pieces of the collection are unique of their kind, meticulously and beautifully modeled in wax. The collection was created for the purpose of teaching students anatomy of living organisms, while avoiding the problems caused by the decomposition process. One of the museum’s must-sees is The Triumph of Time, created for the Grand Duke Cosimo III de’ Medici. A work of rare artistic craftsmanship, which shows the process of the human body’s deterioration after death. In spite of the many gruesome and horrifying details, a visit to the Specola Museum is a unique experience.
